Outsider Art is a tricky term. It refers to self-taught artists without formal training who operate beyond the bounds of the institutional art world. It is also called Folk Art and Vernacular Art.
“Outsider Art” can help self-taught artists find the recognition they deserve. It can level the playing field for artists without access to arts institutions. But it can also keep them on the outside.
“Outsider Art” falls somewhere between an art-historical movement and a catch-all marketing category. We will have to wait and see where it lands.
