Conceptual art has been in the news recently. Maurizio Cattelan drew criticism when he duct taped a banana to a wall and sold it for an outrageous $120,000. To drive the point home, Cattelan titled the work Comedian.
Comedian is a work of conceptual art, which means that its value is less about how it appears visually or what it is made of materially. Rather, its value is in the idea of a work of art itself. Conceptual art is in turns funny and outrageous. Cattelan also created a marble statue of a middle finger and a hyper-realistic sculpture of Pope John Paul II being crushed by a meteor. Conceptual art raises questions about what even art is.
