1). In the most literal sense, decolonization refers to political independence from colonial empires. It is an act of reclamation and a state of sovereignty.

2). Decolonization refers to other forms of independence as well. It means divesting from colonial histories, philosophies, and ways of thinking.

3). Arts institutions have long been agents of colonialism. They have been major players in exercising state power and telling colonized histories of art. However, some artists, scholars, and activist groups are working to decolonize the art world.
